Cafe, Larder and Food Bank Logos

Duns Fair Share (DFS) is a community based registered Scottish charity run by volunteers. DFS runs a community Cafe and Larder along with the Food Bank. In an effort to give each their own identity we have created a separate logo for each while still maintaining the link under the management of Duns Fair Share.

Cafe and Larder

The Cafe and Larder are currently open for two hours on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 10am and 12pm.

Cafe

The Cafe provides a warm environment for the community to get together over a cuppa and a biscuit while providing a place for community services to attend and provide outreach services.  It is pay as you feel but donations are welcome.

We are also trialling late openings on a couple of evenings a week offering good, surplus food to the community. This food has the same day use by date and is otherwise destined for landfill. We offer this on a first come first served basis for free however donations are also welcome.

We are currently looking at ways to develop the use of the Cafe space further for the benefit of the community.

Larder

The Larder provides good food that would otherwise go to waste. Provisions are sourced from Fareshare Scotland, local supermarkets, members of the community and local businesses. The food is generally close to its use by or best before date but is still good.

Our aim is to save as much food from going to landfill as possible.

The Larder is for use by all of our local community. There is a £2 min donation required. It is a small space with room for two people at a time. You can get up to 10 items, one item from the freezer, up to four items from the high shelves and usually two items and one per shelf from the fridge. However, we often have free items that don’t count in your 10 item total, so look out for these. Please bring a bag with you.

We apply for grant funding to help us run the Larder so we ask visitors to note down their post code and initials, this is so we can show how many people and from what areas are using the Larder each week. This helps us with grant applications.

We are looking into alternative opening hours to make it more accessible to more members of the community. We will communicate this in due course via our website and social media.

Food Bank

The Food Bank provides emergency food parcels to members of the local Berwickshire community who are struggling to make ends meet and have been referred to us by a number of agencies including GPs and other health professionals, Housing Associations (e.g. Berwickshire Housing Association, Eildon Housing Association), Social Services, Citizens Advice Bureau, Schools, Nurseries, Church Ministers.

We provide a range of food items including pasta, cereals, tinned good, toiletries, pet food etc. The Food Bank receives food donations from the local community via drop off points in Duns Coop, The Church and Duns New Plus, along with other donations throughout the community including from the local schools. All donations of food and indeed financial donations made to the Food Bank are used only for these referrals. These donations are kept quite separate from the Larder.
