In the “Larder” this week 2nd June 2025

This week is volunteers’ week. Duns Fair Share is run completely by volunteers and we would like to thank our amazing team for all the valuable work they do. The fridge has a really good mix of items including some lovely black grapes. We have lots of melons, galia and cantaloupe, aubergines, carrots, loads of lemons and a huge number of tomatoes. The bananas are very ripe and would be good for baked bananas, banana bread or smoothies. The extension dates for the lemon iced tea, microwave rice and lemon curd are written on the whiteboard at the side of the fridge. FareShare work with the manufacturers and then give…

This week we have 24 litres of frozen milk. It has a use by date of the 2nd June 2025, so will need to go this week. The milk will be an ‘extra’ item and won’t count as your freezer item. We also have a table full of rice pouches which also need to go this week. Please help yourself. As you will see from the photos we have lots and lots of big oranges available and a range of other fruit and vegetables.  A date for your diaries, Sustainable Borders will be visiting the cafe on Tuesday 10th June to give energy advice.  The What Matters Hub will be…

We have some wonderful fruit and vegetables available this week. Lots of strawberries and cream! We also have some rhubarb which was donated from a local garden and a whole box of ripe bananas. The bananas need to find homes tomorrow. The mushrooms in the fridge also need to go on Tuesday and won’t count as a fridge item.  On Thursday the Community Policing Team will be available in the cafe for a chat. This is a great opportunity to get information about keeping safe from scams, home security and local issues.  It is also a good opportunity to meet the local team. The kettle will be on. We open…

As you know, we like a challenge at Fair Share. This week we have two baskets piled high with clementines. A good healthy snack. We also have cauliflowers, apples, onions, lettuce and a good range of items in the fridge. New in the freezer are packs of oven chips.  Thank you to Farne Salmon, Greenvale Potatoes and Duns Co-op for their continued support.  The What Matters Hub will be at the cafe tomorrow (Tuesday). The kettle will be on and doors open at 10 am.

From this week, we have increased the weight of surplus food delivered by FareShare (Edinburgh). We will have to pay a higher delivery charge but will be able to order more fruit and vegetables which have proved to be very popular. The feedback we have had indicates that people like to be able to take what they need from the larder rather than the produce being pre-packed in plastic bags. We are very grateful for your continued support. Let’s fill tums not bins.

It looks like we are going to have some glorious weather.  As you will see from the photos we have a good range of fruit and vegetables available. We had a delivery from Eildon housing which included a mystery item which I had to research. It is called taro. Apparently you can cook it like a potato, so roasted, baked or boiled. The fridge is full of pasties and sausage rolls.  This Wednesday is World Food Waste Day. 33% of all food produced globally is lost or wasted every year. Let’s do our bit to reduce this amount. Pop in for a cuppa we are open 10 till 12 noon Tuesday…

Well that’s Easter over and we are heading towards summer. As you will see we have a real mixture of items in the fridge this week. The steak slices need to go tomorrow. We only have 12 of the yoghurts left which is amazing as we started off with 144 pots! The bizarre item of the week, on the extras table, is a 10 litre box of water. There are lots of fresh fruit and vegetables available. The What Matters Hub will be at the cafe tomorrow (Tuesday). It’s hard to believe we have been open for over a year. Just think of how much food you have helped to…

Well the sun might have disappeared but we still have a rainbow of fruit and vegetables available this week at Duns Fair Share. It’s been hard to fit everything on the table! The blueberries need to go tomorrow. We have had a delivery from Eildon Housing so lots of choice. The fridge still has a ‘yoghurt mountain’ and lots of other tasty things. Also available are bakery goods from Duns Co-op, salmon from Farne and potatoes from Greenvale. Pop along for a cosy cuppa and help save the planet. We are open 10 till 12 noon Tuesday and Thursday.
