In the Larder this week 16th September 2024

Well it’s a real challenge this week. As you will see from the photos, we have a bumper amount of fresh fruit and vegetables. We need a bigger table! Also this week we have 24 tins of coffee on the extras table. The fridge has a distinctly Italian theme. Lots of macaroni and lasagne. A while ago I tried freezing ripe bananas. I can now report that it works and the loaf I made worked perfectly. Come along tomorrow and stop all this food going to landfill.

This week we thought it might be a good idea to explain where the food available comes from. As you will have probably guessed the frozen salmon comes from Farne in Duns. They have supported us from day one along with Greenvale from whom we collect bags of potatoes. Nearly all the bread and bakery goods come from Duns Coop. Marchmont House and Abundant Borders in Duns give us fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables. Eildon Housing bring food they obtain from FairShare in Edinburgh every fortnight, and this includes some fresh produce. FareShare also deliver directly to us each week. We complete an online request to FareShare the week before…

We also have loads of fantastic fresh vegetables from Marchmont House. Claire from Abundant Borders deserves a special thank you for digging potatoes for us in the pouring rain last Wednesday. We really appreciate it. From the photos you will see we have 17 packs of sausages which need to go tomorrow and some new things in the freezer. Fingers crossed the weather improves. We will have the kettle on. Looking forward to seeing you at Duns Fair Share and thank you for your…

When does a courgette become a marrow? We have some huge courgettes from Marchmont House this week. I’m not sure if they should be called marrows or big courgettes. We also have runner beans, onions and a few rainbow carrots. The fridge has twelve tomato and mozzarella pasta bakes which need to go tomorrow, some tomatoes and just a couple of the fresh cucumbers. The freezer has salmon from Farne, spicy bean chilli, honey roast dinners and some more of the very popular rhubarb and custard pies. As always we will have bread and bakery goods from Duns  Co-op and potatoes from Greenvale. We will also have more fresh produce…

As you will see from the photographs we have had another fantastic donation of fresh vegetables from Marchmont House. You can’t get more local. We also have lemons, limes and tomatoes from FareShare. A fresh fruit and veg bonanza! On Thursday we will also have fresh produce from the Abundant Borders garden in Duns. The fresh soft fruit from Abundant Borders has been extremely popular. Last week local residents also dropped off home grown vegetables. The kale and lettuces disappeared within minutes. Thank you Kate and Lesley. Also last week the Co-op in Duns kindly donated lots of brioche rolls and buns. Their week in, week out, support is very…
